Derek's story.
A slight departure from the normal 1001careers.com testimonial,
Derek's story reveals what it's like to benefit from the housing
sector's services and support. It's his story, told in his own
words.
"I self-referred to a treatment centre called Alcohol and Drugs
Abstinence Service; this was where my new life began. I was
homeless at the time, and was lucky enough to get a place at a
substance abuse clinic. Here I got myself clean, but after six
months, I was ready to be discharged and was in real danger of
returning to a life on the streets.
"This is when I first heard about Adullum. I didn't realise it
at the time, but it was the start of a special and rewarding
chapter in my life. Pat became my key worker and I was offered a
tenancy in a flat in Heaton Chapel. Up until now I'd never had my
own place, even though I was 38 years old.
"The flat was of good size, and as soon as I got settled in, all
the things I needed were provided by Pat. She also provided weekly
support sessions including sound advice on budgeting and other
aspects of running a household, but ultimately it was up to me to
put the suggestions into practice.
"One session in particular stands out. And that's the day I was
going through a bad patch concerning access to my two sons. I told
Pat what was going on; she sat with me for an hour and half and let
me get it all off my chest. It was just what I needed at that
moment in time, and I will always be grateful to Pat for that
day.
"As part of my continuing rehabilitation I started a Health and
Social Care GNVQ Level 1 and 2. Eventually, another housing
association found me a flat in Stockport. Today, I am living in
Stockport, working full-time as an assessment worker and continuing
my studies.
"I've been clean from drugs and alcohol for two years now, and
I've never been this productive and happy. Many organisations
helped me along the way. But it was Adullam who gave me a stable
address and support when I needed it most. And without it, I
wouldn't be where I am today."
Proof, if ever it was needed that the housing sector offers some
of the most worthwhile work around.
